Portugal and Biodiversity: The Price of Ignorance

Portugal hides one of Europe's greatest treasures: a unique biodiversity, shaped by a geography that crosses the Atlantic with the Mediterranean. From the forests that shelter the Iberian lynx to the endemic flora of our islands, the natural heritage is the invisible engine that guarantees water quality, soil fertility, and resilience against desertification and wildfires.
Nevertheless, we live with a profound contradiction. Biodiversity in Portugal is not valued.
We view nature as a static backdrop or a mere resource to exploit, ignoring the fact that habitat destruction and the silent extinction of species threaten our own economic and social survival. Protecting the environment is still seen by many as a "luxury" or an obstacle to progress. It is the price of our ignorance. We urgently need to reverse this cycle!
