The Douro in Literature
The Douro in Literature
5 days tour on the beautiful Douro Valley
Service Description
The Douro is more than just a river, more than just water flowing between rocks. The Douro is the ancient and painful history of many people over many centuries. It is the testimony of human will against adversity, poverty, and a hostile landscape that has been tamed with great effort. The fascination that the Douro exerts on all who visit it is evident in the visual arts, in Manoel de Oliveira's cinema, and in the works of many writers. However, no one more than Agustina Bessa-Luís knew how to portray it and make it her own. Agustina's work is closely linked to the geographies where her novels take place. Porto, Minho, and Douro are privileged stages where the author brings her characters to life, characters who are also marked by the landscape, customs, and society they are part of. The author is a cultured guide, intimately familiar with the places she describes, attentive to ways of speaking, social spaces, class distinctions, and the small details that reflect the soul of a place: an abandoned house, a bend in the river, a church bell, a half-open window, an old manor house in ruins. Agustina's Douro is a place of wonder, where the harshness of the landscape dramatically intersects with the miraculous work of many generations who have transformed and humanized it. The proposed route takes us upriver through the most emblematic places of her life and works, from stately estates to the simple houses of the people, from breathtaking viewpoints to small secret corners, old streets, manor houses, taverns, wine cellars, and the houses where the writer lived. A fascinating journey through space and time, lived and recounted. Tour duration: 5 days (Tuesday to Saturday) Includes: Transportation, hotel lodging (4 nights), meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner), tickets (where applicable), pack of selected merchandising.
