Service Description

In the Middle Ages, noblewomen in Portugal played diverse roles. Beyond the traditional roles of wives and mothers, they often stood out as central figures in the administration of properties, mediating conflicts, and forming political alliances. Education was carefully cultivated, including knowledge of Latin, literature, music, and theology, allowing them to act in religious and cultural leadership positions. For example, Queen D. Teresa of León (c. 1080-1130) – mother of the first King of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques – played a crucial role in forming of the kingdom. Her tomb is in the Cathedral of Braga. This route of the medieval Portuguese princesses showcases several of Portugal's most significant convents and monasteries, where these and other royal figures lived, were buried, and played crucial roles in the intricate web of European political alliances during the Middle Ages. Wrapped in local gastronomy and the picturesque landscapes of Northern and Central Portugal, this route offers a unique perspective on the history and legacy of Portuguese medieval noblewomen, providing an unforgettable experience of discovery and reflection. Tour duration: 4 days (Tuesday to Friday) Includes: Transportation, hotel lodging (3 nights), meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner), tickets (where applicable), pack of selected merchandising.
