On the Edge of the Three Kingdoms
On the Edge of the Three Kingdoms
3 or 4 days tour in the Northern Borders of Trás-os-Montes
Service Description
Trás-os-Montes, the medieval Portuguese Province literally means: Behind the Mountains. Before the Portuguese border was defined at the end of the 13th century, the region was known only by the names of its lands, rivers, mountains, towns and cities, such as Lands of Barroso, Bragança, Lands of Corgo, Panoias or Miranda. It is a region of ancestral traditions, connected to the soil and the landscape, where the Celtic past still appears, through the folklore, the dances, the music and its colours. Miranda do Douro, for example, on the North-eastern border, has its own language, the Mirandese, the second official language in Portugal. A land of contrasts, between ice and torrid heat, between mountains and valleys, Trás-os-Montes is also the border between Galicia, Portugal and León. The Land of the Three Kingdoms, as it was once called, it is covered with castles and keeps, ancient strongholds of defence and attack, which put princes and kings to the sword at different wars. From the Portuguese and Leonese armies, the Military Orders and even an English Plantagenet prince and his men, all marched through these vast territories in their rhythm of victories and defeats. Tour duration: 3 days (Tuesday to Thursday) or 4 days (Tuesday to Friday) Includes: Transportation, hotel lodging (2 or 3 nights), meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner), tickets (where applicable), pack of selected merchandising.
