Service Description

The year was 27 BC, all of Iberia was under the rule of the Roman Empire. All Iberia? Not really. In the northern provinces, from the Cantabrian Mountains to the North West Atlantic Coast, today’s Galicia and North Portugal, the Callaeci Celts kept themselves free from Rome. Octavian, the young general, and grandnephew of the late Julius Caesar and, by then, known as Augustus, the first Roman emperor, started a war against the Callaeci and the Cantabri. In order to support his legions, in the years of 15 and 14 BC Octavian founded the cities of Asturica (Astorga, Spain), Lucus (Lugo, Spain) and Bracara (Braga, Portugal), all, naturally, with the title of Augusta. Braga became an important city of the Roman presence in Iberia and the capital of the Gallaecia province. At the end of the Roman Empire, at the beginning of the 5th century AD, Braga became the capital city of the Kingdom of the Suevi and of the whole of Gallaecia. During the Middle Ages, Braga restored the cathedral and became the first diocese (later archdiocese) on the Iberian Peninsula, as Primate of all Hispania. At the beginning of the 12th century, Count Henry and his wife Teresa from Portucale, obtained important support from the bishops of Braga, and this support was passed on to their son, Afonso Henriques, the future first king of Portugal. In the 16th century, Archbishop Diogo de Sousa launched an urban regeneration project, opening up new streets and squares. In the 18th century, the city was transformed with the construction of large baroque buildings. By the 19th century, the inauguration of the Braga line on the Minho Line in 1875 marked the expansion of the city and its quick connection to Porto. Today, Braga is an active modern city, the third largest in Portugal, with a young and multicultural population and a promising future, with a past worth visiting.
